Introducing the first Doll Reader/Haute Doll exclusive.By Toni Fitzgerald What's in a name? For the brand new 16-inch (41-cm) Doll Reader/Haute Doll exclusive, it's really the window to her soul. She is Eshe, and her name means "life," as in larger than, full of, and living it to the fullest. One look at the beautiful Eshe, and she'll have stolen your heart . and she seems to know it. Like Cleopatra, the original Egyptian queen, she has the quiet confidence of one who is clever and quite aware of her own beauty.
She has a Middle Eastern look. She wears a stunning form-fitting gold dress with puff sleeves, gold metal filigree earrings and necklace, and an Egyptian queen's hat. She also carries a staff, giving her an even more regal bearing. Her platform shoes elevate her to an imposing presence suitable for Egyptian nobility. The resin doll comes with a head cap, and she has another wig that collectors can swap in to change her look completely.
Eshe is a limited edition of 50 that was produced by Angelic Dreamz, the Canandaigua, N.Y., doll shop behind the popular JAMIEshow line of resin ball-jointed dolls. Angelic Dreamz owner George Gonzalez had a vision of Eshe that sprang from one inspiring color. "We started with gold," Gonzalez says. "For some reason I drew inspiration from gold, and the runway. There was a very similar look from [designer] Galliano last year with the Egyptian motif, which was really trendy in fashion for a while."
Indeed, Gonzalez notes that the Egyptian look never really goes out of style. The mystical themes of ancient Egypt continue to captivate the imagination of Westerners centuries later, much like Eshe captivates onlookers with the slight curve of her eye.
Naming the doll wasn't easy. "It's hard naming a doll," Gonzalez admits. "You have to think about so many things, including does someone [another doll] already have that name."
Gonzalez had a bit of time to think about it, but not much. It took just two months to produceEshe. "That's not typical in the toy world, but it's typical for us because the factory is only producing our dolls. There's not a waiting line for other products," Gonzalez says. "We have much more control than most manufacturers." Eshe will be available for sale exclusively through Doll Reader/Haute Doll for a limited number of readers. One of the best things about her, for those who like to play with their dolls (and who doesn't!), is that she will fit perfectly into clothing designed for other 16-inch fashion dolls, offering the potential for a whole range of new looks. Still, no matter how you dress her, Eshe's essence won't change. "She just has a real regal quality," Gonzalez says. "She looks like an Egyptian queen." Photos by George Gonzalez, Angelic Dreamz
