Fashion Doll Quarterly
"THE GLAMOUR ISSUE "
Summer 2008

Oh,
how I love glamour! Even when I was a little girl, I loved to play
dress-up and watch old movies to see stars like Carole Lombard slink
around in furs. Or Audrey Hepburn charm Fred Astaire and the rest of the
world in “Funny Face”. My mother often reminded me that I liked to walk
around in a dress all the time, carrying a small patent leather purse
and white gloves. Clearly, I was having a Grace Kelly moment.
This love of glamour led me to Barbie, my only childhood toy. I had no
need for bears or play stoves. Barbie was my everything. Of course, this
led to a career in fashion and an ongoing love affair with film and
costume.
So, you can imagine how I couldn’t wait to start planning this issue!
And apparently, I was not alone. Alex Forbes and I spent hours on the
phone planning all the fun things we would put in this issue. And when I
emailed our contributors to get a feel for what they were up to, the
responses came back immediately! Now that is inspiration!
And the inspiration came in many forms. For Alex, it was the drama
unfolding in Tyler Wentworth’s world, with the coming of the Voss models
and the possible implosion at the House of Wentworth due to Regina’s
return. For Senior Editor Leeann Bernard, she looked to the new
incarnation of Gene, and her inspiration for long time collectors Wayne
Nilson, Brian Bulkley and Michelle Michael.
Fashion Editor At Large Denise Jefferson had two daunting tasks.
Photograph a fashion porfolio featuring the world’s most iconic model,
Barbie, while wearing the stunning creations of Dressmaker Details
Couture, by Steven Fraser (which she did flawlessly, we might add).
Terri Gold decided to share what we have learned about photographing
these icons and others so that you can take great photos, too. Maryann
Roy takes us back to the world of Dollikins, but also shares with us the
wonderful talents of Hollywood Interior designer William Haines. Maryann
has been creating her own suites of furniture, which you may have seen
in these pages, as well as online. So, it was natural for her to think
of glamour not just in terms of fashion dolls, but in what surrounds
them as well.
The very talented Matt Sky is a New York based hair and make-up artist
who works with the best (real) models and photographers in the world. He
applies his many years of skill to The Sybarites in this issue,
imagining the choice of real make-up and beauty products that might be
used to get that same decadent glow.
Once those girls slink out of the make-up chair, have them walk over to
the rolling rack and take a look at Pam Tobey’s pattern for the girls.
They only wear the best, but they wouldn’t turn down OOAK couture made
by your own loving hands, would they? Top it off with a faux fur
pattern, created by Angela Wade.
If you prefer the more petite ladies, like Fashion Royalty, we have a
lovely buodoir screen that is easy to put together and makes a great
prop for your rooms and dioramas. After all this, you will need a trip
to the spa yourself! Just don’t forget to bring
your copy of FDQ while they are doing your nails!

Fashion Doll Quarterly
FALL 2007 ISSUE
"ACCESSORIES"
What do you get the
girl who has everything? What about the doll who has everything?
The concept is daunting when you consider how many millions of shoes
Barbie has.
Even the Fashion Royalty girls have an impressive cache of
accessories after only six years.
The CED girls have wine and art work, Tyler has her drawing board
and dressmaker mannequin, and let's not even try to count the
paraphenalia available for a Volks Super Dollfie!
In this issue, we touch on some of our favorite accessories and the
dolls who wear them. Alex Forbes takes the CED ladies on a jaunt to
sunny Spain, but found time to play with a few Bratz dolls after her
assignment. Denise Jefferson gives us a little bit of everything
that is fashionable and elegant, with sets, props and the lovely
looks of Model Muse dolls as well as the endlessly chic FR girls.
And Matthew Sky once again shares with us some of his extraordinary
vintage Barbie collection.
This is the first full issue of FDQ with a Barbie doll on the cover.
We were very excited to have access to our cover girl, Mistress of
Ceremonies, to shoot exclusively for the magazine. The new Pivotal
bodies give Barbie the lifelike flexibility she has long deserved.
Marsh Matulionis goes one-on-one with Mattel designer and collector
Bill Greening to discuss all the exciting new additions in the
Barbie collector line, including the return of Christie and the
Steffie face mold, along with fun character dolls like Kimora Lee
Simmons and Cher.
For those who like to keep up to date with news and events, we have
convention coverage on Grant A Wish and the Tonner Doll Convention.
We also have updates on the top designers chosen for Project Dollway,
which is already underway. The designers have been hard at work on
the first two challenges, and soon the official website will unveil
what has been happening. This is where you get to participate and
see if you agree with the judges, and decide who gets your vote as
the top fashion doll designer in the world!
We suggest you put this issue in your bag, and take it with you
wherever you go. It's the perfect accessory for the fashion doll
collector!
