"THE GLAMOUR ISSUE "
Summer 2008 ((Photo
courtesy of Mattel. Cover photo shot exclusively for FDQ by Pat Henry.))
Oh,
how I love glamour! Even when I was a little girl, I loved to play
dress-up and watch old movies to see stars like Carole Lombard slink
around in furs. Or Audrey Hepburn charm Fred Astaire and the rest of the
world in “Funny Face”. My mother often reminded me that I liked to walk
around in a dress all the time, carrying a small patent leather purse
and white gloves. Clearly, I was having a Grace Kelly moment.
This love of glamour led me to Barbie, my only childhood toy. I had no
need for bears or play stoves. Barbie was my everything. Of course, this
led to a career in fashion and an ongoing love affair with film and
costume.
So, you can imagine how I couldn’t wait to start planning this issue!
And apparently, I was not alone. Alex Forbes and I spent hours on the
phone planning all the fun things we would put in this issue. And when I
emailed our contributors to get a feel for what they were up to, the
responses came back immediately! Now that is inspiration!
And the inspiration came in many forms. For Alex, it was the drama
unfolding in Tyler Wentworth’s world, with the coming of the Voss models
and the possible implosion at the House of Wentworth due to Regina’s
return. For Senior Editor Leeann Bernard, she looked to the new
incarnation of Gene, and her inspiration for long time collectors Wayne
Nilson, Brian Bulkley and Michelle Michael.
Fashion Editor At Large Denise Jefferson had two daunting tasks.
Photograph a fashion porfolio featuring the world’s most iconic model,
Barbie, while wearing the stunning creations of Dressmaker Details
Couture, by Steven Fraser (which she did flawlessly, we might add).
Terri Gold decided to share what we have learned about photographing
these icons and others so that you can take great photos, too. Maryann
Roy takes us back to the world of Dollikins, but also shares with us the
wonderful talents of Hollywood Interior designer William Haines. Maryann
has been creating her own suites of furniture, which you may have seen
in these pages, as well as online. So, it was natural for her to think
of glamour not just in terms of fashion dolls, but in what surrounds
them as well.
The very talented Matt Sky is a New York based hair and make-up artist
who works with the best (real) models and photographers in the world. He
applies his many years of skill to The Sybarites in this issue,
imagining the choice of real make-up and beauty products that might be
used to get that same decadent glow.
Once those girls slink out of the make-up chair, have them walk over to
the rolling rack and take a look at Pam Tobey’s pattern for the girls.
They only wear the best, but they wouldn’t turn down OOAK couture made
by your own loving hands, would they? Top it off with a faux fur
pattern, created by Angela Wade.
If you prefer the more petite ladies, like Fashion Royalty, we have a
lovely buodoir screen that is easy to put together and makes a great
prop for your rooms and dioramas. After all this, you will need a trip
to the spa yourself! Just don’t forget to bring
your copy of FDQ while they are doing your nails!

SPRING 2008 ISSUE
"GOTHIC" (Cover pic
by Susan Renee Tomb)
Well, it may be
the post-Holiday season with Christmas and New Year's passed, but the
vibe around here is strictly Halloween!
Our theme for this issue is GOTHIC.
This is not to be confused with "Goth". It's not all black-lipped
punk dolls wearing striped leggings. What we are looking at is high
drama, crazed Victorian nannies wheeling black perambulators, virgin
governesses throwing themselves off cliffs, sultry fortune tellers,
ghosts, and well- yes, the occasional sexy vampire.
The drama of life and death plays out for us every
day. And that is what makes the fantasy of eternal life and eternal
romance so very appealing. So many dolls in fact seem to channel this
emotion. From Evangeline Ghastly and Agnes Dreary to
Volks Super Dollfie and Fashion Boulevard's Felice La Rouch,
there is a place for the edgy and extraordinary doll in ones' fashion
doll collection today.
Black is the new black again on the runways, so this year's fashions
will easily suit you if you have a deathly pallor and melancholy
expression. Cemetery chic came to us in the form of Wilde Imagination's
Evangeline and CED's "Black Roses" Cara (which had a
touch of Cher's farewell tour thrown in for good measure), along with
Tonner's "Dark Embrace" Sydney and the "Ghosts of Christmas
Past".
Even
Jason Wu's goddesses of glam, the Fashion Royalty girls, included a very
gothic Agnes von Weis, decked out in a severe sheath of black
satin that made us think of a catwalk model-as-stern-school mistress.
With her stern expression and her huge leg o' mutton sleeves, Agnes
seemed to challenge us to look her straight in her dark, smoky lidded
eyes without getting slapped for bad behavior.
And so,
in this issue, we will delve a bit deeper into this topic, as well as
some tidbits on Toy Fair, upcoming events and those we participated in
this past fall. Leeann Bernard talks to designer and FDQ contributor Sam
Danson of Empire Clothing. Alexandra Forbes interviews the talented
Isabelle of "Repaints by IsaBelle", and Jon Copeland takes us inside the
OOAK Doll Divas customization project of "The Mayfair Witches", the
proceeds of which have gone to Toys For Tots. Many of your favorite doll
artists have recreated the characters from Anne Rice's epic 1990 novel,
The Witching Hour (Lives of the Mayfair Witches), and we have
them here, "captured" if you will, for all to see in print!
In our
last issue, we introduced you to Evangeline Ghastly. Now, our
cover girl Evangeline's designer, Joe Petrollese, shares a bit more
about her story and tells us what's going on up in the attic in Ipswich.
Contributor Angela Wade went wild for Wilde Imagination's EG, and has
created an exclusive pattern for Evangeline to wear on her frequent
forays into the local cemetery. No wonder she calls it, "Blood & Roses".
What else would you wear in the cemetery alone at night?
For those
of you squeamish types, we also have news on Metrodolls mini convention,
the Jason Wu event, the Austin BJD convention and, of course, the Volks
Halloween Party.
So, wrap yourself in a shroud, curl up in the attic and peruse the pages
of FDQ. They are to die for!

Fashion Doll Quarterly
WINTER 2007 ISSUE
"ART" Celebrating an
anniversary!
It is certainly
gratifying to say they have made it for four years, and as tehy
go into their fifth, they hope to continue to entertain and
inspire you with the best that the world of fashion dolls has to
offer.
Since FDQ magazine's launch in 2003, a lot has changed - not
just within the pages of FDQ, but out there in the doll
world, too.
Collectors have been feeling a bit tapped out. There is a sense
of feeling stuffed after too big a meal at the buffet. It seems
everyone is resting a bit before going back for more. It looks
like we may have finally reached critical mass.
From the Publisher: But I take this resting stage as a good
sign. It is a phase in which both collectors and manufacturers can
regroup and focus on what really belongs in the market and on the
shelves. If you think back to the Sixties and the plethora of
Barbie-like dolls that have come and gone since then, it is no surprise
that the glut of fashion dolls in the market today would create a sense
of buyer's fatigue.
There is just so much to choose from that frankly - we can't!
That is why I am particularly
happy with our cover girl Valia and the new Dynamite Girls by Integrity.
Jason Wu and the Integrity design team have given us
something for everyone. If, like me, you now look for fewer but better
dolls that really grab you, then Valia is your girl.
She is instantly collectable and meant more as an art piece to admire
than a doll to make over and sell on eBay. On the other end of the
spectrum, the Dynamite Girls are here to give you eye candy for a great
price. They are better quality than most playline dolls and more
sophisticated, but the gentler prices should allow collectors to feel
like they can still buy a variety of fun and fashionable dolls. In a
way, these dolls make me think of the accessories in my closet.
I have my Jimmy Choos and my flip-flops! I have my Marc Jacobs bag,
and I have some canvas totes from The Gap. Both suit me - but at
different times and on different days.
To me, the most exciting thing
about Valia is that she is at once new and yet familiar. She is
reminiscent of so many wonderful vintage dolls, yet her jointed resin
body feels new and contemporary. She is truly a doll for connoisseurs
who want the best in their collections. Just as one collects fine art
and searches for the perfect canvas or sculpture, elegant and
sophisticated Valia (to my mind one of the preeminent fashion
dolls ever made) is for the discerning collector who looks for beauty
and distinction. We are proud to introduce her in this issue and offer
her as an exclusive through this magazine.
We are also proud to showcase
the work of our talented contributors, people such as LeeAnn Bernard,
Alex Forbes, Denise Jefferson, Mercy Neumark,
and Matt Sky. I have seen collectors grow in their skills and
talents as photographers, stylists, and designers, and I look forward to
more and more collectors coming forward and sharing their wonderful work
with us, just as our new contributors Angela Wade, Susan
Tomb, and Daniel Fletcher have.
So take some time to peruse the
pages of FDQ, and let your appetite be whet with delicious
dolls. They may be addictive, but they are calorie free, and after an
hour you will be hungry for more!

FALL 2007 ISSUE
"ACCESSORIES"
What do you get the girl
who has everything? What about the doll who has everything?
The concept is daunting when you consider how many millions of shoes
Barbie has.
Even the Fashion Royalty girls have an impressive cache of accessories
after only six years.
The CED girls have wine and art work, Tyler has her drawing board and
dressmaker mannequin, and let's not even try to count the paraphenalia
available for a Volks Super Dollfie!
In this issue, we touch on some of our favorite accessories and the
dolls who wear them. Alex Forbes takes the CED ladies on a jaunt to
sunny Spain, but found time to play with a few Bratz dolls after her
assignment. Denise Jefferson gives us a little bit of everything that is
fashionable and elegant, with sets, props and the lovely looks of Model
Muse dolls as well as the endlessly chic FR girls. And Matthew Sky once
again shares with us some of his extraordinary vintage Barbie
collection.
This is the first full issue of FDQ with a Barbie doll on the cover. We
were very excited to have access to our cover girl, Mistress of
Ceremonies, to shoot exclusively for the magazine. The new Pivotal
bodies give Barbie the lifelike flexibility she has long deserved. Marsh
Matulionis goes one-on-one with Mattel designer and collector Bill
Greening to discuss all the exciting new additions in the Barbie
collector line, including the return of Christie and the Steffie face
mold, along with fun character dolls like Kimora Lee Simmons and Cher.
For those who like to keep up to date with news and events, we have
convention coverage on Grant A Wish and the Tonner Doll Convention. We
also have updates on the top designers chosen for Project Dollway, which
is already underway. The designers have been hard at work on the first
two challenges, and soon the official website will unveil what has been
happening. This is where you get to participate and see if you agree
with the judges, and decide who gets your vote as the top fashion doll
designer in the world!
We suggest you put this issue in your bag, and take it with you wherever
you go. It's the perfect accessory for the fashion doll collector!

SUMMER 2007 ISSUE
"ICONS"
Sci-fi is such a huge genre, and there are many different books, films,
and television shows that fit under this banner. As a child of the "Star
Trek" generation, I cannot remember a time when there wasn't some show
or movie in this arena that didn't capture the public's imagination with
tales of future
utopias.
The gang at FDQ took the sci-fi theme and ran with it, as you will
see in this issue. From Denise Jefferson's "Cosmic Glam" to Alex Forbes'
fantasy space aliens, you will want to put on a silver mini-dress and
some go-go boots, sit back, and listen to some trippy rock music like
Pink Floyd or The Moody Blues. If you can't fit into a mylar jumpsuit,
buy one for your fashion doll, courtesy of Fashion Boulevard's new
Gemini Starship League collection. Our special guest contributor, Alain
Tremblay, also jumps in with a fabulous feature starring the FR vixens
in space! And all this time, unbeknownst to us, Robert Tonner was
cooking up his own sci-fi line called
Luna and
The Little Martians. Luna landed on Earth just in time to make
the cover of FDQ, so find you'll be able to find out more about this new
hit, along with "The Last Mimzy" movie collection and some other
surprises. Meanwhile, back on planet Earth, we also have features on
Volks, BJDs, new products for 2007, as well as LeeAnn Bernard's look at
dioramas from the pros, and updates on the Project Runway.

"ICONS"
An icon is someone or something widely and uncritically admired—a symbol
of a movement or field of activity. Using that definition, Barbie, Cissy,
and Gene surely fit the bill. And what of our other favorites? Well,
certainly the Fashion Royalty line is developing a loyal and passionate
following, as has Tyler Wentworth, Volks Super Dollfie, and MGA
Entertainment’s Bratz dolls. But will they be the mainstay of collectors
a decade or even a half-century from now? That is the question.

Few things are more exciting to a collector of
contemporary dolls than viewing the New Year’s doll lines for the first
time.
For months it seems the anticipation builds. It begins with quiet
conversations between avid collectors that soon become sprinkled with
eager speculation and hearsay. Sentences begin with, “Do you think …?”
and are answered with, “I hope ….” Doll retailers enjoy a sudden surge
of renewed popularity as serious doll lovers begin imploring them for
details on a certain artist’s collection or a particular company’s new
line.
True dolly addicts may lie awake until the wee hours of the morning
working through their conjectures
about the New Year’s doll lines, and others may spend their sleepless
nights searching the Internet for rare sneak peeks.
As the year’s newest dolls begin to surface, each sighting is apt to
elicit an involuntary intake of breath, a small rush of adrenalin, and
if the excitement level is running high enough, an impromptu performance
of the often heard of—but seldom seen—“Dolly Dance.”
So, what could be more appropriate on this, the eve of Doll Reader’s
35th anniversary, to show our appreciation to all of the subscribers who
have sustained us through the years, than a very special extended issue
devoted entirely to what doll collectors love most?
Ladies and gentlemen, with the help, talent, and cooperation of more
than two dozen doll artists and companies, we give you the very first
Doll Reader Debut of Dolls.

"Rock and Roll is here to stay", as the song says. Why "rock" now? Well,
rock seems to be not only a lifestyle (but a fashion trend, too) that is
fast becoming iconic. The talented artists and re-painters in the field
of dolls are creating a more edgy look for the collector's market, and
so, too, are designers like Doris Mixon of Fashion Boulevard and Jason
Wu, both of whom see the need for casual, but cool, sportswear as well
as red carpet gowns for our fashion dolls.

As John Lennon said,
"Life is what happens when you are busy making other plans". You
have to make those plans no matter what is happening in life, and so
many chose to travel. For collectors, there are so many options when
taking a trip. So many conventions to attend, stores to shop and friends
to meet. If you can't travel, then just sit back and be an armchair tourist by
