KARUNA
Compassion in Sanskrit
A noted actress whose
talent for creative expression extends beyond film, this artist
saw the Horse as ''the perfect symbol of Man's connection to the
Animal world. I chose to make a fantasy creature inspired by the
fabulous horses of Central and Far-away Asia. I have called her
'Karuna,' which is Sanskrit for Compassion. Compassion for all
sentient beings, great and small, all over the world.'' With
Karuna, Ali demonstrates that her talent and creativity extend
far beyond the silver screen.

UNITY When this artist
conceptualized a design that depicted the ''unity'' of cultures
and nature that thrive in the Land of Enchantment, he had no
sense of the saga he was about to embark upon.
From the center of the horse's back, the artist wanted rays from
the sun to encircle animal drawings inspired by pre-Columbian
drawings and carvings. On one side he chose to represent the
predominant native tribes in New Mexico: the Navajo, Pueblo and
Jicarilla Apache. On the other, he selected a tableaux that
presented the Europeans who settled in this land: Spanish
conquistadors, the missionaries, Mexican farmers and Western
ranchers. On the horse's forehead, he placed a green hand, a
gesture of friendship and symbol of the eventual union of
cultures that took place.
To give the full-sized original the representation of ''unity''
impact he felt it deserved, the artist decided not to paint this
pony, but to onlay it with tiny Indian seed beads, applied one
at a time. This stunning work is covered with over one million
five hundred thousand beads -- a feat that took the artist 1,400
hours -- over 100 days to complete. So impressive was the
outcome that it was nominated for the Guinness Book of World
Records and received the award for the most ambitious Pony.Retired Limited Edition.

A limited edition is an artwork or object in which
a limit is placed on the number produced. When the limit is reached,
production ceases. Since the number of items available for purchase is
limited, the value of each one is increased.
Limited edition works of art, just like original works of art, are an
investment. Numbered limited editions are an even better investment
because ownership can be registered. This tracking of ownership together
with proof of the "limited" nature of the edition lends credibility to
its value.
The Trail of Painted Ponies® is a good example of the rise in value of a
limited edition figurine. When the original Painted Ponies were first
displayed in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2001, they caused nationwide
excitement. The best artists in the Southwest were invited to transform
life-sized horse statues into colorful works of art in order to promote
cultural tourism and showcase the artistic community of the Southwest.
Organizers also hoped to raise some money for nonprofit organizations
through a philanthropic auction of the life-size ponies. But what a
surprise! All three goals were generously exceeded. The Trail of Painted
Ponies® enthralled hundreds of thousands of people, focused a bright
light on the artists, and raised almost a million dollars for the arts,
youth programs, animal shelters, and environmental organizations.
The project grew to involve artists from all over the country. Books
were written and small seven-inch figurines of the most popular
life-size ponies were licensed as numbered, limited editions. Westland
Giftware became the official licensee for the production of these
figurines and the first set of fourteen was issued in the spring of
2003. Their popularity is now fabled.
Each edition of a specific Painted Pony is limited to 10,000. When
production of that specific Painted Pony reaches that figure, the first
edition, or "1E," is completed and the second edition, "2E," is begun.
This follows suit until that specific Painted Pony figurine is
"retired," which means no more are being produced.
The individual item number that follows the edition number is the record
of the order in which the edition was produced. Therefore, a Painted
Pony with a higher number was produced later than one with a lower
number.
Limited editions are an investment. But they also bring satisfaction and
joy to the owners and all who admire their beauty and meaning.
